Olive Oysterling (Panellus Serotinus)

Panellus serotinus, commonly known as the Olive Oysterling or Late Fall Oyster, is a species of fungus in the family Mycenaceae. It is found in North America and Europe, where it grows in shelf-like clusters on the dead wood of deciduous trees, especially oak.

The Olive Oysterling is characterized by its fan-shaped or somewhat kidney-shaped caps, which are typically between 2 and 10 cm in diameter. They are smooth, moist, and olive-yellow or olive-brown in color. The gills underneath are yellowish, narrow, and closely spaced.

Though it is not generally regarded as a choice edible due to its tough texture, some sources suggest it can be consumed when thoroughly cooked. However, you should never consume any wild mushroom unless it has been positively identified by an expert.

As always, when foraging for wild mushrooms, safety should be your first priority. If there’s any doubt about a mushroom’s identity, it’s better to leave it alone.
