Pholiota nameko
Pholiota nameko

Nameko, or Pholiota nameko, is a small, amber-brown mushroom with a slightly gelatinous coating that is used extensively in Japanese cuisine. The term “nameko” is Japanese for “wave child”, which is possibly a reference to the mushroom’s wavy cap.

Nameko mushrooms are cultivated in Japan and are the second most popular mushroom in the country, after shiitake. They are often used in miso soup due to their ability to create a naturally thick and slightly slimy broth. They have a nutty, earthy flavor and a silky texture when cooked.

Nutritionally, like many mushrooms, Nameko is a good source of dietary fiber and protein. It also contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B, vitamin D, potassium, and copper. It’s considered to be a healthy addition to the diet.

As always, mushrooms should be properly identified before consumption, as there are many species that are poisonous and can look similar to edible varieties.
