Description
Metarhizium anisopliae is a species of entomopathogenic fungus that is commonly used as a biological control agent for pest insects. Entomopathogenic fungi are those that infect and kill insects. M. anisopliae is found in soils all over the world and has been shown to be effective against a wide range of insect pests, including termites, grasshoppers, and beetles. M. anisopliae has a unique mode of action. The spores of the fungus attach themselves to the cuticle of an insect and then penetrate the insect’s exoskeleton, causing the insect to become infected with the fungus. Once inside the insect, the fungus grows and eventually kills the host. M. anisopliae has been developed as a commercial biopesticide and is used in a variety of agricultural applications. It is considered to be an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides, as it is non-toxic to humans and other non-target organisms. Research is also being conducted into the potential use of M. anisopliae as a source of bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Some studies have shown that the fungus produces secondary metabolites with antimicrobial, anticancer, and insecticidal properties.
